Please join us for a performance art event at Sky Meadow, Washougal. We are excited to have visiting artist Kaaren Beckhof create a site specific piece.
Saturday, September 7, 2019 from 5 – 8:30 PM
Berlin, Germany based artist Kaaren Beckhof will create “Paddock“, a large strew drawing, at a small farm in Washougal, WA. Conceived as a site-specific endurance performance, Paddock is inspired by the creatures of the American West. Influenced by the unique surroundings, the smells and sounds of the space, the artist will create a labyrinthine drawing over the course of several days, culminating in the completion at dusk on Saturday, September 7. Visitors are welcome during the final hours, incl. during the reopening of the space to it’s inhabitants.
Kaaren’s work is based on a specific ephemeral drawing technique from southern India called Kolam, a small ornament, strewn with stone powder onto the freshly cleaned ground each dawn. As soon as the drawing is finished, it gradually disappears, reflecting the transient nature of all life itself. Because the long act of strewing is simultaneously visually ornamental and time-based performative, time and space, movement and motionlessness converge in a meditative process.
Kaaren holds a Master’s degree in ‘Interdisciplinary Art’ from the San Francisco State University, USA.
SVP requested by 9/5. Refreshments will be served.
We are kindly asking to support the artist with a modest donation ($15 suggested).
