Think of Seashells

Francesca Capone

October 11–November 13, 2018

Opening reception: Sunday, October 14, 2018 from 3–5 PM

Nationale is pleased to announce that Francesca Capone is joining the gallery as a represented artist. This news coincides with Think of Seashells, Capone's second solo show at Nationale.

The exhibition will consist of a group of large scale weavings and a poem with an inquiry into sense of place. The tapestries presented are based off of a series of notebook sized woven works—made on site in various locations with found materials—and comes in tandem with the launch of Capone's most recent book, Woven Places, published by Some Other Books in New York City.

Francesca Capone is a visual artist, writer, and textile designer. Her books Text means Tissue(2017), and Writing in Threads (2015) focus on textile poetics. She has exhibited at Whitechapel Gallery in London, LUMA/Westbau in Switzerland, Textile Arts Center in NYC, Nationale in Portland, OR, and 99¢ Plus Gallery in Brooklyn. Capone has been an artist in residence at the Anni and Josef Albers Foundation, Andrea Zittel's A-Z West, and the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. More of her published work can be found at Gauss PDFTunica Magazine, and in The New Concrete from Hayward Press. Her academic work includes lectures and workshops at Brown University, Rhode Island School of Design, Reed College, University of Washington, and Alberta College of Art and Design, among others. This fall, Capone will present Weaving Language at Leeds Beckett University's INSIDE/OUT lecture series, and will be an artist-in-residence at Shandy Hall in York, England, courtesy of the Laurence Sterne Trust.
