Alison Dougherty Solo Exhibit, Haiku D'etat...An Illustrated State of Mind. Curated by @undergroundrobin
📍Ford Gallery PDX 2505 Se 11th Ave Portland, OR
🗓️May 3 — July 21 2024
⏳Hours: All days 10-6 or by appointment
This project explores the technique of call and response. Alison had asked people to submit original haikus about moments in time, experiences they had about love, loss, a beautiful sunset, the wing of a songbird. She paints in response to these Haikus by drawing inspiration from their words. Using specific colors, textures and movement found in each poem. Ultimately illustrating their state of mind. In the end the haikus will become the titles of the paintings. This collaboration of mark making, melody of words echoed by brushstrokes of paint will be on view at the Ford Gallery PDX.
This evening is also a benefit for P:ear nonprofit. an incredible organization that work with homeless youth in arts, education and mentorship.

Alice Christine Walker Artist Talk & Closing Reception
“Gilding the Lily” Solo Exhibition at Blackfish Gallery, 938 NW 9th Ave Portland on Saturday April 27, 2024 from 2-5pm ✨
Alice Christine Walker presents Gilding the Lily, a multimedia exhibition with a focus in photographic arts. Her exhibition unpacks our collective hardship around unrealistic beauty standards and recontextualizes history to help us see how it keeps repeating itself. In many ways, this work is a rebuttal to kintsugi. It is a testament to a shared female experience: being told that we are damaged or broken and need to reconstruct ourselves. This work reclaims our experiences, amplifies our voice and declares “we do not need to be mended, we are perfect with our imperfections ungilded”.

Math Bass, Open Face Parentheses at @lumberroompdx
April 13th - July 13th, 2024
🌷Opening Saturday April 13th from 4-7pm featuring a performance by PURE O @pure.o
Full Body Parentheses, is a mid-career survey of Math Bass’s sculptural works, accompanied by the artist’s site-specific murals and a selection of small paintings. Best known for their #paintings, which iterate on a lexicon of symbols to create a unique language, Bass’s sculptures in Full Body Parentheses animate and complicate those more familiar, flattened forms, creating a resonant, playful world of iconic objects.
Bass has explored the intersection between #performance and #sculpture since they began making sculptures to appear as characters in videos at the beginning of their career. Seriality, the repetition of forms, and sculpture as character remain crucial themes in their practice. In this vein of performance, the exhibition begins in a double curtain room with a roving, pre-programmed spotlight. The light searching for the moment before the show begins is a classic performative moment. The stairway that leads up from that room to the main gallery has a tinted skylight that casts a light over the whole space, creating an ephemeral entryway to the show. From here, performance and sculpture find various points of connection among the forms, rendered in #metal, #wood, #ceramic, #canvas, and #housepaint.
The body of work in Full Body Parentheses started over a decade ago with a set of #costumes in performances that referenced houses being tented for termites in Los Angeles, and has evolved into a set of objects that are deceptively simple in their poetic ambiguity. The works evoke common objects, human bodies both absent and present, witty riffs on American design, and forms all together stranger than all of these.

ATRÁS DO PENSAMENTO (BEHIND THOUGHT), Quinha Faria
📍Carnation Contemporary 8371 N Interstate Ave #3
🗓️April 6 — 28, 2024
⏱️Sat–Sun, 12–5 PM & by appointment
Quinha Faria presents new work in conversation with Clarice Lispector’s 1973 book, Água Viva. In Lispector’s novel, originally titled Behind Thought, a painter sits down with her stream-of-consciousness to create a book of unconventional form and rearranged language. The result is a unique and intimate piece of literature.
Quinha responds to Lispector’s queries of existence and passing time with her latest body of work, in which thin layers of paint are exposed, revealed, and obscured on carved plywood. Lines are burned, disrupted, forgotten, and repeated– they make their way up to the surface, dictating direction and occasionally playing trickster. Shapes of various textures emerge and disappear as visual stimuli that question what is obvious and what remains unobserved. Quinha encourages viewers to also consider the unseen elements of a space by inviting Tatiana Godoy-Betancur and Ryan Windus, who work with scent and sound, respectively.

Modulations, Nathan Paul Rice and Ellen Robinette
SATOR projects 1607 SE 3rd Ave, Portland OR 97214
March 16 - May 4, 2024
Hours: Saturdays, 12-4pm or by appointment
Rice and Robinette’s world collide in a collaborative mural, as well as a series of sculptures where Ellen’s pictorial language combines with Nathan’s wooden forms.
New works by Nathan Paul Rice explore the tension between play and peril. In play we navigate structures, explore risk, find and make our own connections, and through this process also discover the perils of the physical world. In Rice’s world, forms obscured by black clouds reveal just hints of abstracted bodies living in a physical plane filled with vibrating patterns and color pops. He enlists color and pattern in both his paintings and sculptures to consider the effect of tension between the public and private spheres on our bodies and minds.
Robinette’s universe is full of space and breath. The eye roams along ombre lines and rests in flowered fields of pattern, enters and explores shadowed landscapes and arcades. This current series of works, which the artist loosely calls Merge Visible, examines collaging past work with current in an attempt to mirror how memory is experienced–it’s layers, cyclical patterns and defiance of time. Past photos of Ellen’s own memories traveling and exploring abandoned spaces are softened and hazy through the photocopy transfer process, both content and technique employing nostalgia. She uses a language of pictorial abstractions for non-verbal storytelling, and is interested in how when a sequence or series of imagery is put together it begins to form a narrative.

April 13 - May 12, 2024
Hours: Sat - Sun 1-4 PM

These three artists are mediums, conduits of “what’s trying to force its way through”. Not hiding. Reverberating agents attuned to the spheres and what’s oozing out. Intoxicated by the subject as much as the material. “I am merely the instrument”, the fuzzy pumper barber shop, an apparatus ignited by color. Curator, Steve Brown

The Snowy Day at the @portlandopera 🎭
This was such a special performance to attend! A great introduction to #opera for young people, but sooo enjoyable for any age! Loved the set design and wardrobe that was created for this adaptation, based on The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats (which has beautiful illustrations). Composed by Joel Thompson, Libretto by Andrea Davis Pinkney ❄️
